SIGNIFICANT FEMALE

Brief information about few significant females:The vast majority of the pharaohs of ancient Egypt were men, but a number of significant female pharaohs did come to power. These women were generally regents, meaning that they ruled Egypt after the death of their husbands or in the absence of a viable male heir.

Merneith

Little is known about this early Egyptian ruler, the first recorded female pharaoh. She was pharaoh during Egypt's First Dynasty, around 2970 BC. It is generally believed that Merneith assumed the throne after the death of her husband Djen and held it until her son Den was old enough to assume power. Her name appears on a seal on Den's tomb, included in a list of names of First Dynasty rulers.

Hatshepsut

Hatshepsut was pharaoh during the 18th Dynasty, ruling from about 1479 to 1458 BC. She had a remarkably long and successful career for any pharaoh, male or female. Some of her many accomplishments include establishing a Mediterranean trade network, leading military campaigns into Nubia, the Levant and Syria and spearheading a number of major building projects.
