NURSING WITH COMPASSION

What is nursing?"Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations."http://www.nursingworld.org/EspeciallyForYou/What-is-Nursing

Assumptions of Nightingale's Theory
  • Natural laws
  • Mankind can achieve perfection
  • Nursing is a calling
  • Nursing is an art and a science
  • Nursing is achieved through environmental alteration
  • Nursing requires a specific educational base
  • Nursing is distinct and separate from medicine
  •
  • Please explore my comment about nurses and treatments:

  • Nursing- today, everyone wants to be a nurse for the money and not to care for the patients need. Few days ago, I visited a certain Nursing home where the patients are treated below human’s level. How so, they were given medications by the nurses on their unit, nurses who do not show them love are give them a little water or juice to wash down the medicine that was given to them. The nurses were stern, they do not introduce themselves to the patients or tell them what they are about to do. As I sat and observed, I saw two nurses walked-up to where patients were sitting in wheelchairs, she gave them their medications, did not introduce herself  or tell the patients what she was about to do. This is what she does - crusted the medications. Into a small plastic cup walked to where the patient or patients seated, and said to the patient, “Open your mouth” and gave the medication. Without a smile on her, face or showing compassion to the frail elderly, I believe she should greet them before giving the medications, saying Mr. or Ms. x how is your day. Are you OK today? You are looking beautiful!-follow after-introduction,” I am Mary x your nurse for the day; would you like to take your medication? Um it is good for you, this will makes you get well soon you know”.
In addition, give a smile. My God, that person used to live a good life and has no idea that they would ends up into a nursing home. Looking for that love or those smile their families or friends use to give them before they becomes sick… found themselves among some cold-blooded caregivers, who makes them detonate fast and die. They treat the patients below human dignity. However, my heart goes out for the patients. Nursing is a calling and not only a pay-check as some people believes.
The founder of nursing Florence Nightingale was a compassionate person. She sees nursing in a compassionate perspective -Theory about nursing practice is much different from the way today’s nurses believe. Below are few of the things she mentioned about Nursing Practice

    • Health-Health is “not only to be well, but to be able to use well every power we have”.
    • Disease is considered as days-ease or the absence of comfort.
    Nightingale's Theory and Nursing Practice
Application of Nightingale's theory in practice:
    "Patients are to be put
    • Person-People are multidimensional, composed of biological, psychological, social and spiritual components.
    • in the best condition for nature to act on them; it is the responsibility of nurses to reduce noise, to relieve patients’ anxieties, and to help them sleep."
    • As per most of the nursing theories, environmental adaptation remains the basis of holistic nursing care.
    • Florence Nightingale provided a professional model for nursing organization. She was the first to use a theoretical founation to nursing.
    • Her thoghts have influenced nursing significantly.
    • Nursing is not to take slightly. When you take up the position to be a nurse in any facilities or private practice you must show compassion toward the people in your care. You should not in any circumstances treat a person below humans level. A good nurse heals a person with a smile and kind words, such as, X you are looking sad today, what is the matter? everything is going to be ok. Especially after you take your medicine. Your family will be here soon, cheer-up the Lord is with you. I love you.

The Founder of Nursing Florence Nightingale was a compassionate person this is why she is the founder of nursing.
